Lets connect your printer to your device(s)
Your new Canon printer is Wi-Fi enabled, meaning that you can connect it wirelessly to your computers, smartphones and tablets.
You can also connect it to a computer with a USB cable if you’d prefer. Tip - You won't be able to connect via USB if you are using a tablet or smartphone.
Don't worry, no matter what you choose, we will take you through it step-by-step to get you printing in no time.
So how would you like to connect?
Wi-Fi is how many devices are able to speak with each other without cables. This covers devices such as computers, smartphones and tablets, and even printers. This means you can share your printer, without extra cables, among multiple devices and people in your home.
Get your USB cable ready
For this step, you’ll need a type-A to type-B USB cable for your printer (USB not included), as well as the driver software for the printer. This is available on your installation CD, and can also be downloaded below:
When you install the driver, you'll be stepped through the process to set up your printer. Make sure you don't plug in the USB cable until you are prompted to.
Watch the video below for more help.
To connect your printer to your computer, you'll need a 'USB A to B' printer cable, available from the shop where you purchased the printer. If you've had a printer before, you've probably got one at home already.
Make sure you click the link above on the device you are setting up (unless you are using the disc that came with your printer). Our website should automatically detect which operating system you are using and only show you those results. Look for the "Full Driver & Software Package" - if you use the search, make sure to pick the correct operating system (Windows or Mac)
Connecting via ethernet
In order to connect your printer to your computer network, you'll need an Ethernet cable (sold separately).
Prepare your printer for connecting to your wired network:
- Ensure the printer is turned on.
- Remove the cap from the upper port located on the right side at the back of the printer
- Connect the printer and a network device (router, etc) with an ethernet cable. Ensure you use the upper port (Ethernet) rather than the lower port (USB)
- When using a router, connect the printer and computer to the LAN side (same network segment)
- Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer until the POWER lamp flashes 11 times, then release the RESUME/CANCEL button after the eleventh flash
- The network connection setup is now complete
Double check your printer's in Cableless Setup Mode
Let's make sure your printer is set to ‘Cableless Setup Mode’. If this is the first time you’ve switched on the printer, it should already be active.
On the printer, the green power light should be on, and the blue Wi-Fi light should be flashing.
Do you see the flashing blue light?
In the Canon printer range, most entry level models don't come with a screen or alpha numerical keypad to manually browse and join Wi-Fi networks. This makes it a little less intuitive to set up your printer with Wi-Fi. But we're right here to help you through the process. In a nutshell, Cableless Setup Mode is a temporary unsecured Wi-Fi network that is only active when you are setting up the machine. The way it works is that you connect to that Wi-Fi network with your device, and then step through a configuration process to apply your preferred Wi-Fi configuration setting.
Prepare your printer for Cableless Setup Mode
Press and hold down the ‘Wi-Fi button’ until the ‘blue Wi-Fi lamp’ starts flashing. Then, press the ‘Colour button’ twice in quick succession.
The ‘blue Wi-Fi lamp’ should be flashing slowly, which means you have successfully enabled Cableless Setup Mode.
For a visual demonstration watch the video below.
Do you already have a wireless network?
There are two types of Wi-Fi the printer can be configured to use:
- An existing network — this is the most common method and it involves connecting to your current Wi-Fi network. Use this method if you already have a WI-FI network in your home.
- Wireless direct — connect directly to your printer from your device. Use this method if you don’t have a Wi-Fi network in your home.
Still not sure which method to use?
Watch the video below for a more detailed visual explanation.
Connecting directly to your printer's Wi-Fi
You can connect up to five compatible devices, but need to connect each one individually.
To prepare your printer for connection, choose a device to make your first connection.
Tip — It’s easiest to use a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet, but you can also use a Windows or Mac computer.
You can connect multiple devices to your Canon printer. However, you will need to use one device to make that initial connection, so it can then apply the correct settings to the printer. Once this is done, more devices can be easily connected.
Computer setup
To set up your printer with ‘Wireless Direct’ you need to install the driver, and follow the prompts.
The driver can be found on your installation CD or you can download the software below:
As you go through the installation prompts, make sure you choose the ‘Wireless Direct’ option. Once this is selected, the printer will create its own secure Wi-Fi network, which your computer can connect to.
Watch the video below for a visual demonstration of the installation process.
When you’ve finished connecting your printer to your computer, you can then go ahead and add up to four additional devices.
Connecting an Android
First you’ll need to download the 'Canon Print Inkjet / SELPHY app', available for free on the Play Store.
Before you open the app, go to Settings on your Android device, and look for ‘Wi-Fi’ under connections. In there, you’ll see a network starting with ‘Canon_IJ’. This is the temporary Wi-Fi network your printer created through ‘Cableless Setup Mode’.
Open the Canon Print Inkjet / SELPHY app that you downloaded earlier, and follow the prompts to set up the printer with Wireless Direct.
Watch the video below to see a step-by-step demonstration.
Now your printer should be working with your Android device. Don't forget, you can connect up to four extra devices.
iOS device setup
First you’ll need to download the Canon Print Inkjet / SELPHY app, available for free on the App Store.
Before you open the app, go to Settings on your Apple device, and look for the ‘Wi-Fi’ menu. In there, you’ll see a network starting with ‘Canon_IJ’. This is the temporary Wi-Fi network your printer created through ‘Cableless Setup Mode’.

Connecting additional devices
The process of connecting additional devices is slightly different to the initial setup procedure because the Wi-Fi network has changed, and a password has been added.
To start with, browse for your printer’s new Wi-Fi network on your additional device. The name of the network will be similar to the name of your printer, while the password is usually its serial number.
If you can’t find the serial number, or if you need to check the printers network settings, you can print out a ‘Network Configuration Page’.

Connecting to your existing Wi-Fi network
This means that you can use it wirelessly with any compatible smartphone, tablet, or computer that’s on the same network.
To configure your printer this way, you’ll need to establish a Wi-Fi connection between the printer and your Wi-Fi router.
To do this, you’ll need to connect directly to the printer with one of your devices, and go through a special configuration routine.
Using a smartphone or tablet will be the easiest way to do this, but you can also use a Windows or Apple computer.
