One of our favourite things to do each year is reflect on the incredible talent and stories from within our community. We love seeing how you capture the details in your world and the lengths you go to nail that perfect shot.

Sydney Harbour was woken by a loud fog horn from an ocean liner entering Sydney this morning. The city was blanketed in heavy fog which caused poor visibility and delays in transport. Personally, I enjoyed every minute of it and was glad I had my camera on the way to work!

The funny thing about this day is that we were photographing healthy food at a restaurant, and yet there was this bee in the garden. I took my Macro lens for the food but it ended up being the bee that gave us the best photo.

The right place at the right time. One of my biggest tips I can give somebody is to be in the right place at the right time you have to continually be out looking around. Get up for sunrise, climb to the top of that mountain, just go that extra mile. Eventfully, you will find yourself in the right place at the right time. It is then that all that practice and technical knowledge you have learnt kicks in and you don’t have to think about anything else except for capturing that beautiful moment in front of you.

On this particular afternoon, I was out camping with my family and a late afternoon storm pushed through. As soon as it lifted I could see the colour starting to change. I knew I had all my gear ready to go and quickly picked up my 1DX Mark II and my EF 11-24mm f/4L lens and ran to the beach out in front. This only lasted about 5 minutes but because I was out and looking around and I had the technical knowledge of what lens and camera to grab I ended up with some images that have been seen all over the world.

The 11-24mm lens came into its own league during this remarkable evening. With the forecast looking very favourable for strong thunderstorm development in the eastern Kimberley, I had to hit the road in Broome at 4am if I had any chance of reaching the port town of Wyndham 1000km away in time for the show. I got to the 5 Rivers Lookout and that is when things really started to ramp up. I set the cameras up and managed to capture the storm as it moved over the tidal flats and as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Moments before the storm. I was going to Mildura to meet up with some fellow photographers to get some Astro pictures but when we were setting up we realised what was coming right at us. What amazing luck to be in this location to capture this! This is a panorama made up twelve portrait images handheld.

Really, this is just another day at work. My job is in the environmental industry, so naturally we have amazing wildlife around us every day. I never leave home without my Canon gear. Tips — patience is a must, have your settings on your camera ready to shoot, and try to predict what your subject is going to do. Spend some time around what your shooting and get a feel for them, it will make it a lot easier to set up for your shot and hopefully, you end up with the shot you imagined.

I guess I've seen a million silhouette photos of surfers on the beach, so I tried to think outside the box. I wanted to show a 'behind the scenes' shot but also include the main subject I was shooting. It took quite a while and a few different surfers walking past to capture the perfect angle and composition. The surfers were none the wiser to what I was doing haha.
