June 2007 - Canon has ranked No.1 in a list of the world's most climate-friendly companies.
Canon top-scored with 77 out of a possible 100 points and achieved a STRIDING* rating by Climate Counts. Canon scored well for its response to climate change and overall environmental impact.
The Climate Counts scorecard ranked 56 companies that produce products or services that are commonly used by mainstream consumers in North America and Britain. These companies are also leaders in their respective sectors, which range from electronics to fast food.
Compiling the Climate Counts scorecard is a non-profit group organised by Clean Air-Cool Planet, a US environmental organisation, and Stonyfield Farm, a US organic yogurt producer.
The rankings were based on 22 criteria in roughly four categories:
1) How well a company had reviewed its global warming impact; 2) How much it had reduced that impact; 3) How much it supported public policies that encourage this reduction and; 4) Whether the company made this information available.
Canon's corporate philosophy is kyosei, a Japanese word meaning "living and working together for the common good". This philosophy underpins Canon's commitment to reducing its own environmental burden and focusing on the complete lifecycle of its products, from product design and production, through to sales, use and disposal.
