When it comes to the environment, Canon has a lot more to offer your business than just great hardware. We've adopted an "eco-tech" approach to our work that creates harmony between ecology and technology. We are committed to minimising the consumption of resources and preventing pollution at all of our facilities. Our software systems promote better workflow and greater individual accountability for what people print. We've also implemented recycling programs in all of our offices. This in turn reduces wastage of paper, ink, time and money. Great equipment plus great systems plus great support equals far greater environmental responsibility.
What We Can Do TogetherPrinting has a significant effect on your environmental output because of consumables such as ink, toner and paper. So optimising your printing environment, which reduces the volume of consumables used during printing, is an excellent way to reduce your environmental footprint.
Here are a few things you can do with Canon printers to help reduce consumption:
- Program all copiers to default to double-sided printing.
- Activate the power-saving option on your multifunction devices so that they go into sleep mode if they haven't been used for a few minutes, and shut off entirely if they haven't been used for a few hours. Canon's quick-start technology means that printers in standby mode are ready to print again within five to ten seconds.
- Limit unnecessary output by storing print jobs in the device's memory until the user goes to the printer and enters a pin code to print and collect the document. (This option is only available with our MEAP-enabled devices.)

Leading the WayCanon is an environmental leader with
ISO 14001 certification at all Australian locations. That means we meet the international environmental standards against which organisations are assessed. Here's how we do it:
We examine how product lifecycles impact the environment and look at ways to help offset possible damage. For example, we've been successful in developing multifunctional devices that utilise as few resources as possible and consume dramatically less energy, as well as programs for the collection of used toner cartridges. At each stage of the lifecycle of Canon products - production, use and recycling - we assess the amount of CO2 emitted and undertake efforts to reduce it.
- ProductionWhen designing and manufacturing products, we carefully consider how we are affecting the environment. We have made efforts to reduce waste by reducing the number of power cords, manuals and compact discs supplied with our products.
When procuring parts and materials from our suppliers, we set standards not only for quality and value, but also for environmental consciousness. Canon prioritises environmentally sound materials when making purchase decisions.
- UseThe On Demand energy-efficient technologies incorporated into Canon products have resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions, while at the same time saving energy consumption costs for our customers.
Despite its high print volume and capacity, the imageRUNNER iR5075 consumes just 1.5 watts of power on standby.
- RecyclingLocated in Sydney's Wetherill Park, the National Eco-Centre provides a refurbishment and recycling facility for a range of Canon products and parts. The National Eco-Centre receives old equipment and spare parts from Canon divisions around the country. At this site, new machines are tested and run, and packaging is removed and recycled before products are shipped to a customer in full working order. Used spare parts are either redirected to a recycler, or refurbished and sold back into the market at a reduced price.
In addition, products and parts that are returned from the field and cannot be reused are sent to Close The Loop in Melbourne, which guarantees that none of the waste goes to landfill.
Canon has also joined forces with Planet Ark in a unique environmental program called Cartridges 4 Planet Ark, aimed at collecting and recycling laser and inkjet cartridges. Canon Australia is a founding member of this successful program, which increases its collection volume every year.
