Nillumbik Community Health Service (NCHS) is an accredited, not-for-profit medical centre that seeks to promote the physical, psychological and social well-being of people in the Nillumbik community and surrounding areas. With its own board of management, funding for the centre comes from a variety of sources, including federal, state and local government.
The need to upgrade
In busy organisations, such as health centres, a veritable mountain of printed material is created on a daily basis - from correspondence to marketing material to patient receipts. Naturally, this environment leads to increased wear and tear on printing devices; however, it's not always practical for a device in this situation to be replaced any faster than the average four to five year lifecycle suggested for such devices across the board.
As Amanda O'Reilly, Client Services Representatives' Team Leader at Nillumbik Community Health Service, explains, her centre had a Canon printing solution that was over five years old and had made over 1.3 million prints before it was deemed time for an upgrade.
"The age of our device and the number of impressions it had made were both clear indicators that we needed to look for a new one," said Ms O'Reilly. "Additionally, we realised that we would need enhanced functions in our next solution. For example, we knew that we needed colour printing and scanning of a better quality than we had been getting with desktop printers."
High volume faxing was also a key driver in the health service's quest for a new printing solution, with staff noting the savings that could be made by having a multifunction device that incorporated all of its business requirements.
Choosing wisely
Despite being happy with their previous Canon device and its servicing, NCHS exercised its right to evaluate the market for the first time in five years and sought advice and quotes from a number of leading manufacturers.
Explaining that they were looking for a device capable of colour printing, scanning and faxing, NCHS examined the suggested solutions and, ultimately, chose to return to Canon, which had suggested one of its star office performers - the colour imageRUNNER iR C3100.
The iR C3100 is best described as a black & white device that has the ability to print, scan and copy in colour when required. Featuring a new, compact, rotary engine, combined with a short paper path, the device achieves high-speed output of 31 A4 pages per minute in monochrome, seven A4 pages per minute in full colour, and provides an image quality of 9600 (maximised) x 600 dots per inch (dpi).
The iR C3100 has been designed for organisations that wish to progress from black & white to colour, but who are cautious about the financial risks. Canon's solution has been to build a device that can decipher the difference between a colour page and a black & white page - which means that businesses only pay for colour when they use it. When it's not in use, the device simply reverts to fast black & white printing. Further, the device can be configured to administer and control who has access to colour printing and how much they can print.
Professional image
"Given the kind of material we are called upon to produce in-house, such as colour brochures and reports in addition to black & white letters and a huge amount of copying, the iR C3100 really gives us the best of both worlds," said Ms O'Reilly. "We are saving significantly, both time and money, by not using desktop colour printers to produce colour material."
With the largest range of finishing options in its class, the iR C3100 also appealed to NCHS as it has allowed it to produce a range of booklets and saddle-stitched documents direct from the device; putting the results of such advanced document finishing into the hands of its visitors to create an extremely professional image. Other finishing options on the iR C3100 include automatic collating, hole punching and stapling.
The sum result of these capabilities is that NCHS can now present an extremely professional image to its patients and the Nillumbik community at large.
The Canon difference
From the moment NCHS raised its hand on the topic of a new printing device, Ms O'Reilly says that Canon was always easy to deal with.
"Our rep provided all the information and support we needed while making our decision on the new model," said Ms O'Reilly. "Once we chose the model, any service we've required over the phone or in-person has also been very responsive and knowledgeable."
